Teaching Children to Interact with Special Needs Children

Parenting tips
Teach your child about interacting with those with physical disabilities, emphasizing abilities and fostering understanding.

Some conversations will happen on the fly as your child observes people with special needs around them. These conversations will teach them how to respond when they meet someone with different needs than them.

  1. Educate your child about the physical disabilities and teach them how to interact with these children. Also teach that every child is different and they need to interact with each and every child around them. Everyone has their special needs.
  2. Emphasise That Just Because Someone Has a Physical Disability Doesn’t Mean They Can’t Do Something.
  3. Help your child understand that children with special needs can often do the same things as their peers; it just takes them a little bit longer.
  4. Getting to know children with disabilities is really important, with the help of teachers you can do this.
  5. Picture books, audio video can be used to make them understand and learn more about it.
  6. Disability awareness programme can be concluded and let your child be part of it.
  7. Remember that it’s okay not to explain everything all at once. Instead, allow your child to process the information in chunks.
  8. Keep the lines of communication open with the child's parents or guardians, as well as any support staff or specialists involved in their care.
  9. Collaborate with them to develop individualised plans and strategies that cater to the child's needs and learning style.
  10. Flexibility and patience are also essential virtues to cultivate. Every child is different, and what works for one may not work for another. Be prepared to adapt and try new approaches until you find what resonates best with the child you're supporting.
  11. Remember, your dedication and commitment can make a world of difference in the life of a special needs child, and the impact you have can be truly profound.

As a parent, you always want to lead by example. Kids will observe how you react to certain situations or people, so always ensure that you are following the tips above, too!
If you know that there is a peer with special needs in your child’s class, spend time doing research about the condition so you can better prepare yourself to answer your child’s questions. You don’t have to be an expert on the subject, just try to always learn and be compassionate to others
