Balance Exercises are required for maintaining your body alignment and posture. Even good balance is needed to carry out activities of daily living.

Why balance is important?

  • Elderly population : It’s due to bony and muscular changes and imbalance due to age. 
  • Neurological problems or Inner ear issues: Problems with the nervous system, the inner ear, or the circulatory system can make it difficult to coordinate movement. Some symptoms include feeling like dizzy, confused about where the body is in space, anxious about walking or moving.
  • Due to physical disability or injuries: It’s difficult to move all or part of the body. Some symptoms include muscle weakness that causes a person to fall easily, pain when moving that makes it difficult to maintain balance, feeling unsteady on the feet, etc.
  • Vertigo: It is common, with 20–30% of people experiencing symptoms at some point during their lives. It can cause people to feel like they are spinning or out of balance, which can lead to falls.
  • Brain injury or spinal cord injury: Brain injuries may affect balance and mobility. These may present immediately after the injury or start weeks or months later.
  • Sedentary lifestyle:sedentary lifestyle on its own will not cause severe balance issues. However, people who are generally inactive may find they have trouble with balance. This may be especially true for older people or those with other conditions that affect balance.

How to improve balance?  

  • Regular exercise
  • Yoga and Pilates
  • Proper diet
  • Drink adequate amount of water

Balance Exercises:

  1. One leg stand: Standing with your weight on one leg and raising the other leg to the side or behind you.
  2. Tandem stand: Putting your heel right in front of your toe.
  3. Heel raise/Toe raise.
  4. Walking while alternating knee lifts with each step.
  5. Holding the position for a longer amount of time.  
  6. Standing up and sitting down from a chair without using your hands.
