3 min read
Bone fracture
Fracture is often caused by trauma like car accidents. Physiotherapy is important for recovery, reducing swelling and restoring motion and strength.

A fracture basically means a break in the bone by which there is discontinuity in the bone.

What are the types of fractures ?

  • Open or Compound fracture
  • Closed or Simple fracture
  • Unstable fracture
  • Spiral fracture and more.

What are the causes of fractures?

Fractures also know as broken bones, can be majorly caused by trauma such as car accidents or bike accidents. When a road traffic accident (RTA) occurs it put enormous force on the bone, which directly causes a fracture. There are other causes as well for fractures such as :

  • Dislocations
  • Falling on out stretched hand injury (FOOSH)
  • Sports Injury
  • Ligament or muscle tension.

In country like India road traffic accidents are more common cause of fracture. As per a report by World Bank India tops the wold in road crash deaths and injures, It has 1% of the world vehicles and cause 11% of all road cash deaths or injuries witnessing 53 crashes every hour.

One of the such incidents was treated by one of team of doctors Dr.Kishitij, an orthopedic surgeon. Where a 46 year old male who met with Road Traffic Accident (Bike accident) & sustained injury to left elbow. In the below X- Ray on the left side its before surgery, where in you can see Communited (Bone broke in more than 2 pieces) lower end of humerus fracture. Which was fixed by a surgery by using Bicolumnar plating by Chevron Osteotomy.

After the surgery its very necessary to have Physiotherapy treatment.
After the fracture or surgery the bone needs to immobilized to heal, so due to immobilization or no movement of hand the fractured area will be stiff and there will be decrease in range of motion.
Its safe to begin physiotherapy as early as with immobilization with casting/ splinting is done. It’s safe to begin with mild range of motion exercises with the cast/splints on to avoid stiffness & restrictions in movements later.

How Physiotherapy will help in to recover from post surgery fracture cases?

Physiotherapist will focus on :

  • Decreasing the swelling
  • Attaining full range of motion of the joint
  • Strengthening muscles
  • Ice or Heat Therapy
  • Scar tissue mobilization
  • To teach you how to use assistive devices in case of crutch

Physiotherapy after fracture is necessary not only because it helps you to recover faster, but also because they can help you deal with any damage to the nerves or joints caused by your broken bone. This allows you to regain full range of motion after therapy is completed.
