Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal disorder occurring with a frequency of 1:1000 newborns. The extra chromosome 21 is present in triplicate being either maternal or paternal.

Some common clinical features are:
- Flat face
- Upward slant eyes and epicanthal folds
- Small nose with flat nasal bridge
- Mouth shows a narrow short palate with small teeth
- Protruding tongue
- Ears are small and dysptastic (presence of abnormal cells)
- Brachycephaly with flat occiput
- Facial grimace is crying
- Hands are short and broad
