Weak Muscle Tone ; Hypotonia is defined as reduced muscle tone. Muscle tone is evaluated by assessing resistance to passive stretch.
Muscle contraction and stiffness of muscles, tendons & soft tissue can lead to variation in muscle tone.

Conditions in Kids for Weak Muscle Tone:
Commonly seen among these following conditions including those of neuromuscular, genetic, central nervous system, connective tissue, and/or metabolic origins such as Down syndrome (DS), Prader-Willi syndrome & cerebral palsy (CP), Spinal muscular atrophy, Trisomy 13 etc.
Causes of Weak Muscle Tone :
- Brain damage or problems during foetal development
- Infection to brain, neuronal infection
- Lack of oxygen prior birth of the child or immediately after
Signs and Symptoms Weak Muscle Tone :
- Difficulty maintaining head control , sitting upright without significant lean or support, transitioning in and out of positions
- Clumsy or inefficient movement patterns
- Global Developmental delay
- Difficulty with hand eye coordination and in swallowing
- Poor Strength
- Speech Delayed
Precautions to be taken by parents:
- While lifting the child take extra care
- Proper hand placement under the armpits and around the neck and trunk
while transfers/ambulation - Supportive chair or standing frame for making the child stand
- Orthosis & prothesis for support
- Pro wraps, pedi wraps
