At what age what your child should be doing for Improve Handwriting in Kids:

  1. Between 2 to 2.5 years old : Child should be able to now imitate vertical and horizontal lines, and by 2.5-3 years old, a child should be able to imitate drawing a circle.
  2. 3 to 4 years old : Pre-Writing Strokes; children should be able to copy vertical and horizontal lines, and circles, without a demonstration from their parents.
  3.  By 3.5 years old : Child should also be able to imitate you when you draw a plus sign.
  4. Just before age 4 years old :  A typical child may begin to copy simple familiar letters and so on.
  5. Tracing lines : Trace on top of a thick horizontal line without going off of the line much.
  6. Between 3.5 to 4 years old : Grasp, a child should be using his/her thumb and pad of the index finger, while resting the marker/crayon on the knuckle of the middle finger to colour and draw.

Improve Handwriting in Kids: How to train?

  1. Use right tool : If your child's struggling with a regular pencil, try a smaller or shorter, kid-sized one. Also use proper sized books or paper to write.
  2. Find the Problem : Common handwriting problems lie in four main areas: letter formation, sizing, spaces between words, and line-alignment. Focus your child's practice on the letters or concepts that challenge her and make sure she's using two hands to control the paper.
  3. Fun activities for writing : Sensory play can be done like using shaving foam, Rangoli, sand, paint to start writing. Will also help to improve fine Motor skills and finger coordinator. 
  4. Encourage activities other than writing : Games like puzzles, drawing and painting which will help at the start. Will improve hand dexterity and finger coordination. 
  5. Observe Your child's Posture : While focusing on the end product is essential, paying attention to your child's posture and technique while writing is equally important. Take the time to observe yourself and your child while writing. Correcting the grip on the pencil or ensuring you apply appropriate pressure on the pen can significantly impact the quality of your handwriting. These small adjustments can contribute to better handwriting.
